2008 - a productive start!
Verreault Navigation inc. is pleased to report on several major dry-dockings and other activities on site during the latter part of ’07 and early ’08.
First up, in early January was the dry-docking of Navigation Madeleine’s C.T.M.A. Vacancier. The Vacancier was in for the removal of a stabiliser which was damaged in an early winter storm. The yard is presently rebuilding the stabiliser and will reinstall it upon the vessel’s return later in the year.

Following the Vacancier, the yard was visited by another Magdalen Islands vessel – the Madeleine. The Madeleine went in for a scheduled dry-docking and upgrades to the accommodations, including a total replacement of the HVAC systems.
Simultaneously, the yard took on yet more emergency repair work when Transatlantic’s Finnpine was dry-docked following its recent grounding at Pointe-au-Pic in early February.
Finally, the shipyard just wrapped up work on the Thalassa Desgagnés, a double-hulled oil and asphalt tanker from Groupe Desgagnés. The vessel was in dry dock for regular inspections as well as steelwork and painting.

Amidst all of the aforementioned major work, the dry dock was also occupied by a number of other jobs, ranging from the repair the Techno 240 a damaged barge owned by Polaris Construction, the scrapping of a fishing vessel and finally some minor work on a sailboat that was forced to take shelter at the yard and subsequently undergo inspections while en route to the Caribbean.

Recent Activities and Winter Savings!
Capping off a productive year, Verreault Navigation is happy to report on recent visits to the yard from three regular clients - Maersk (A.P. Moller), Société des Traversiers du Québec and Groupe C.T.M.A.

THE CAMILLE MARCOUX DELIVERED EARLY!
Meanwhile, the Camille Marcoux, Société des Traversiers du Québec’s ferry which provides auto and passenger service between the North and South shores of the St. Lawrence River, recently left the yard following a six week lay up for standard repair work for recertification, as well as major upgrades to the vessel’s accommodation and lounge areas as well as inspections to the port propellor, the hull and the tanks. Despite the volume of work performed, the vessel was delivered to the client two days ahead of schedule!

Finally, the first client to take advanatge of winter savings at Verreault Navigation was Groupe C.T.M.A., whose passenger and cargo ferry Vacancier was recently in dry dock for mechanical and steel work as well as sandblasting and painting services. Aside from the excellent quality of work and quick delivery times associated with the Verreault Experience, Groupe C.T.M.A. also benefited from our current offer of significant savings on dry-dockings during the months of December ‘07 and January ‘08.

Verreault Navigation - A Busy Summer!
Following our last report in early-July, Verreault Navigation has seen a high turnaround of regular and long-term clients.
The yard has seen repair and maintenance oriented visits from Rigel Shipping Canada, McKeil Marine, Northern Transportation Co. Ltd. and most recently Relais Nordik, whose Passenger Ferry/Container Vessel Nordik Express was in for emergency repairs following recent troubles on the lower North Shore.
Rigel Shipping Canada's chemical/oil tanker Emerald Star was in for just under two weeks worth of regular maintenance including sandblasting to sa2.5 and complete epoxy coating both number 1 cargo tanks. Scott Lewis, General Manager had the following to say on the facilities:
"We were very pleased with the professionalism shown by the yard and its staff. The slop retention facilities and location of the yard make Verreault Navigation a good choice for tanker operators."
Following the docking of the Emerald Star, came the Wilf Seymour from McKeil Marine. Phil Tate from McKeil Marine was also pleased with the work done during their second visit in six months to the yard :
"As with our previous docking, we are very satisfied with the quality of work done at the yard. The effort made by all at Verreault, to get the vessel out on time and on budget was very much appreciated."

Next up, between scheduled trips to the Arctic, was the Keewatin, a towing tug from Northern Transportation Co. Ltd. as well as two cargo and petrolium barges. NTCL's representative Patrice St-Pierre was equally satisfied with the results.
"All of the problems we arrived with we solved very quickly. The work done by the yard was Excellent"
Finally, as mentioned above, the Nordik Express made an unscheduled stop at the yard for emergency repairs. Patrick Chabot, Project Manager for Relais Nordik also had a positive review for the performance displayed by the yard and its workers.:
"Thank-you to everyone at Verreault Navigation for a job well done! You have a very dynamic team of workers! …until next time"

Verreault Navigation - Full Steam Ahead:
Verreault Navigation is pleased to report on the successful completion of two recent contracts:
First up was Québec Cartier Mining's tug Vachon. Québec Cartier Mining's Harbour Master, Danny Labrie had the following to say on the work performed by the yard:
"I was very satisfied with the dry-docking of tug Vachon. We were scheduled for 16 days but left in 12. The workers were altogether quite efficient, as usual. Once again, many thanks to Verreault Navigation for a job well done, budget respected and management and workers professionalism."
Following the completion of the Vachon, Eastern Canada Towing's tug Pointe Sept-Iles was dry-docked. John Neatby, Port Manager for Eastern Canada Towing was also pleased with the results and efficiency of the yard, stating the following:
"Eastern Canada Towing is very happy with the dry-docking of the Pointe Sept-Iles at Verreault Navigation. A job well done - efficient, ahead of time and on budget.
Next-up for the yard is the Emerald Star, one of Rigel Shipping Canada's three chemical/oil tankers and yet another long-term, loyal client of the shipyard.

Update on shipyard activities :
Verreault Navigation is pleased to announce the successful completion of two recent repair contracts at our shipyard in Les Méchins.
The first contract was awarded to the yard in late April, when the McKeil Marine general cargo vessel, Kathryn Spirit was dry-docked for mechanical repairs and maintenance in order to comply with an intermediate survey for classification purposes. Other work performed during the vessel’s stay at the yard included sand blasting and coating in the cargo holds.
Following the departure of the Kathryn Spirit, the yard was visited by Spliethoff’s Stadiongracht. The Dutch general cargo vessel was dry-docked after ice damage was sustained on the East Coast of Newfoundland. The necessary work included the replacement of the vessel’s four propeller blades, plus an assortment of other repairs. During it’s time at Verreault, the shipyard made an all out effort in order to ensure that the client could meet its trading schedules and pick up its next cargoes on time.
With these two projects successfully completed, Verreault Navigation would like to inform its valued clients and business associates alike, that the yard is always prepared to respond to any and all requirements they may have, and as ever, we are happy to provide proposals and quotes in order to respond to their ship repair, ship modifications or shipbuilding needs.

Greek freighter repaired at Verreault
Following three weeks worth of emergency repairs, the Greek freighter Toro, which is operated by Seastar Chartering Ltd., has departed Verreault Navigation's dry dock.
The vessel, which sustained significant damage to it's hull when it went aground at Cornwall Island on September 5th, underwent just over three weeks worth of steel repairs at Verreault Navigtion's ship repair facilities.
Repairs, which were originally estimated at 10 to 15 tons of steel replacement by an independent underwater survey, began immediately upon the vessel's arrival onsite on September 29th. In the end, repairs entailed the removal and replacement of close to 60 tons of damaged hull and framing at the fore of the vessel.
Despite the significant difference between the estimated and actual steelwork required, the vessel was completed on Wednesday the 25th of October. Following inspections, the vessel was cleared for departure on the 26th.
Next up for Verreault is the Canadian Coast Guard Arctic Icebreaker Des Groseillers, which will be on site for standard repairs and maintenance.

50 YEARS OF SUCCESS!
Verreault Navigation inc. is pleased to report on the success of its highly memorable 50th anniversary celebrations, which were held in Les Méchins, Québec, this past Saturday, September 9th.
The day's festivities kicked off with a shipyard tour, as well as an afternoon cocktail which took place in the company's steel shop, the undeniable highlight of which came from a stirring speech from Ms. Denise Verreault, highlighted by memories of her father (and company founder) Captain Borromée Verreault, as well as a promise to continue with the realisation of his vision and dreams.
Following this simultaneously touching and rousing speech, attendants of the cocktail were privy to a surprise performance by Montréal-based, percussionist troupe, Kumpa'nia, who succeeded in filling the unusual venue with the kind of rhythmic noise that is usually reserved for and associated with the construction and reparation of the shipyard's client's vessels! Kumpa'nia later went on to perform for the village of Les Méchins in an event in part sponsored by Verreault Navigation.
After this remarkable performance, VIP guests of the event were then shuttled to a Gala supper. High points of the Gala included an engaging visual retrospective on the history of the company, punctuated by performances from two talented musical acts - a house band and yet another surprise performance, this time by Québec's own Marie-Denise Pelletier. Despite all of the above, the true highlight of the evening came in the form of an extremely well received gourmet meal, which was prepared under the supervision of two of the regions top chefs, Ms. Dany Gasse and Mr. Yannick Ouellet. The gastronomic meal was comprised entirely of regional ingredients. Finally, to much applauds, Ms. Denise Verreault promised to help keep the Canadian Marine Industry afloat by whatever means necessary.
Throughout the course of the day and evening, over 200 invited guests were in attendance as Verreault Navigation inc., a division of Groupe Maritime Verreault inc., celebrated 50 years of operations as Eastern Canada's most productive shipyard!
Amongst the guests in attendance at the event, were representatives from a number of Canadian and International shipping organisations (not to mention some of Verreault's preferred clients), including Groupe C.T.M.A., La Société des Traversiers du Québec, Rigel Shipping Canada, COGÉMA, Maersk Canada and BAE Systems, some of whom came to the event from as far abroad as Germany and the United Kingdom. Other noteworthy guests included representatives from Groupe Maritime Verreault's Board of Directors, Germanischer Lloyd and the Shipbuilding Association of Canada, as well as numerous other business associates and of course long-standing friends of the family.
It is important to note that the 50th anniversary celebrations also acted as a fund raiser for the Québec Division of the Canadian Red Cross. Mr. Conrad Sauvé, General Manager of the Québec Division of the Canadian Red Cross was in attendance to accept a donation to the amount of $45,000.00, half of which was provided by guests of the Gala. Ms. Denise Verreault, who is the Campaign Chairman for the Lower St. Lawrence Region spoke one last time, this time restating her strong belief in the importance of giving back to the community.
In short, the event was an astounding success, both in terms of recognition for Verreault Navigation's 50 year legacy, as well as for support for this all important charity organisation.

UPDATE FROM LES MÉCHINS
VERREAULT NAVIGATION is pleased to report on the recent completion of two significant vessel modifications - both of which were performed on site during the winter and spring seasons.
The first such modification was performed on the SOCIÉTÉ DES TRAVERSIERS DU QUÉBEC auto and passenger ferry, Catherine-Legardeur, which underwent a complete renewal of the vessel's crew and passenger accommodations and amenities, as well as the bridge.
The other major refit was performed on the TRANSPORT CANADA-owned/GROUPE C.T.M.A.-managed Madeleine. The Madeleine was in dry dock for the installation of a number of sponson modules to the stern of the vessel. These large-scale modules, the majority of which were produced on site by VERREAULT NAVIGATION, were essential in upgrading the Madeleine to comply with new stability regulations for passenger ferries.
Both projects were realised by VERREAULT NAVIGATION's highly skilled and motivated work force, as well as a team of locally hired sub-contractors - resulting in the type of first-class, state-of-the-art and fully modernised vessels which are synonymous with the name VERREAULT. Both vessels will comfortably serve their respective ferry service providers and their clients alike for many years to come!
Following the completion of the above projects, the yard was privy to a very brief visit by EASTERN CANADA TOWING's Pointe Comeau for an emergency dry-docking, which was followed by the docking of EASTERN CANADA TOWING's Pointe Aux Basques, RIGEL SHIPPING CANADA's Jade Star and QUÉBEC CARTIER MINING's Brochu. All of which were dry-docked for regular repairs and maintenance and will be followed throughout the summer season by a number of off shore supply vessels from MAERSK as well as vessels from a number of other clients.
Finally, as we steam through our 50th year of operations, it is worth noting that our forward thinking management team is currently developing long-term repair and maintenance contracts with some of our key clients.

PROUDLY CELEBRATING 50 YEARS!
In 2006, VERREAULT NAVIGATION proudly celebrates 50 years of operations as Eastern Canada's Most Reliable, Innovative And Dynamic Shipyard! The year ahead is sure to be full of noteworthy events and festivities, and it is our sincere hope that our clients and business associates alike will enjoy celebrating this landmark anniversary with us! As well as usual updates on shipyard developments, future editions of this Newsletter will also focus on special events and news relating to our 50th Anniversary.
BUSY WINTER SEASON AT VERREAULT
Winter activities in Les Méchins continue to advance at a typically steady pace. Currently underway onsite are three significant projects for the yard - all at various stages of completion.
Following a flurry of activities in early December, VERREAULT NAVIGATION docked OCEANEX's ice-class Ro/Ro containership, the Cabot. Arriving in mid-December, the dry-docking of the Cabot consisted of significant mechanical and steel overhauls, as well as routine repairs and regular maintenance. The vessel, which is still on site at wharf is undergoing the final stages of a complete overhaul of the two main engine blocks and crank shafts.
Also at federal wharf is the SOCIÉTÉ DES TRAVERSIERS DU QUÉBEC auto and passenger ferry, Catherine-Legardeur. The vessel is roughly half-way through a major refit that involves the complete renewal of the vessel's accommodations and bridge sections. To date, much of the significant structural work on the vessel has been completed - including the construction of a brand new bridge, which was recently installed above the car deck (see photo.) It is expected that the vessel will be back in service sometime in April.
Finally, since our last report, VERREAULT's skilled team of technicians, labourers and welders have been hard at work preparing for the major refit of TRANSPORT CANADA's Madeleine. The vessel is in dry dock to add a number of sponson modules - some of which have already been constructed and are awaiting installation. As previously reported, these modules are being produced by VERREAULT NAVIGATION in order to upgrade the Madeliene to comply with new stability regulations.
