HULL 2000-02 (SIR JOHN FRANKLIN) AND CAMILLE MARCOUX AT LES MÉCHINS

VERREAULT NAVIGATION inc. and LES CHANTIERS VERREAULT inc. have embarked on a joint effort project in the dry docking and transformation of a former FISHERIES AND OCEANS ice breaker into an Arctic research vessel.

The Hull 2000-02 (formerly the Sir John Franklin), a class 1200, 100-m long icebreaker is in the early stages of it's transformation into a state-of-the-art, fully-equipped, research platform for the Canadian Arctic Shelf Exchange Study. Modifications to the vessel include the addition of a dynamic positioning system, a moon pool with internal and external access, a multi-beam echo-sounder, an acoustic well and a fast deployment and recovery launch, as well as the transformation of over 340 m2 of internal and external space into laboratories. The project will see LES CHANTIERS VERREAULT performing all of the transformation work while VERREAULT NAVIGATION will see through all the repairs and maintenance performed on the vessel.

The transformation of the vessel is expected to last until late summer with the vessel departing for the Arctic in early September.

Also in for regular maintenance is the STQ (SOCIÉTÉ DES TRAVERSIERS DU QUÉBEC) passenger and vehicle ferry, Camille Marcoux. The ferry, which runs between Matane and Baie Comeau will undergo scheduled repair and maintenance work. Generally three weeks worth of work, the vessel will be completed in roughly two weeks and is expected to depart the dry dock at the end of May.
